Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
Psalm 34:8
Parents have struggled since the dawn of time to get their children to taste new things. I suppose graduating from bottled formula or breast milk to puréed peas doesn’t garner the most trust? Imagine Eve trying to get anyone to eat anything after the stunt she pulled!
They say comfort food becomes “comfort” food because of the knowledge that you’re being served by someone who loves you. For some a porridge from grandma is just as comforting as a bowl of cereal from a single father. It’s all about the love!
We all decided something looked appealing enough to eat and enjoyed it enough to try something else that was recommended. So, at some point there is a trust developed between the feeder & the eater that allows for broadened culinary horizons. This is the same dance so eloquently outlined in Psalm 34:8. Taste & see! It’s a sugar-coated challenge set on a chocolate-drizzled platter just inviting you to dive in tongue first! Sadly, many of us act like the untrusting toddler who say’s “No!” to everything new. Yet, accepting *this* offer results in our first, real experience of true peace & trust. It’s the most elementary exercise in trust – “Taste this!” It leaves us so vulnerable. What if it’s poisoned, or worse, it’s horrible tasting!? This trial of trust allows us to understand why the writer goes from food to refuge. What’s more comforting than good comfort food? It takes you to a safe place. Food is a refuge! Psalm 23 invites us into a deeper refuge stating “You set a table for me in the presence of my enemies.” What could be more flamboyant a refuge than having a meal while your enemy has to stay at bay and watch!? That’s what The Lord is offering!
Yes, there is a sweet, calming & comforting refuge in The Lord which we’re invited to live in if we’ll just taste and see how good He truly is! So, try Him!
I highly recommend it
